INTIMISM VS VIRTUOSITY
A lot of piano repertoire written in the 19th century and in the early 20th century can fit in one of these two categories. Intimist works are characterised by slow tempi and depict introspective atmospheres: they invite the listener to reflect upon the subtlest human feelings and the deepest questions of life. On the contrary virtuoso compositions are meant to impress and to theatrically represent strong emotions. This recital continuously shifts between these two extremes.
